This photo was taken on the world famous Banzai Pipeline. Very few surf spots in the world compare to the North Shore on the Island of Oahu, and this photo is another example of the sheer power that is the Banzai Pipeline. To get an idea of the scope of the wave just look at how small a human body looks next to it.
There are some amazing places for the big wave surf from Waimea Bay of Oahu or Jaws off the Island of Maui, Mavericks off of California and teahupoo off of Tahiti, but for me the Banzai Pipeline is the best surf for photography because it breaks so close to the shore that you do not need a monster 600mm lens or a boat to get good shots of it in action. With just a 300mm to a 400mm lens you can get some very nice shots of the waves and the surfers like this one here.
For this shot I was using only 300mm lens and it was able to capture this shot very well. It is nice to get real up close and personal with a lens like the 600mm, but with that lens sometimes the scope of the wave can get lost. Sure the detail of the surfer and his board will come out very nice, but the impressive overall wave can be lost if you zoom in too much.
On a big wave day like this you want to shoot from sunrise to sunset. The raw power and beauty of the waves are always somewhat different and every shot has its own unique fingerprint. The Banzai Pipeline on a good day is one of the most impressive things I have ever seen. It is something that everyone should see once if possible.
In case anyone who reads this wants to see the Banzai Pipeline in action for themselves, the big surf season is officially from December 1st through February 28th, but every once in a while there are some amazing surf as late as early April. So if you get a chance to come to this islands in the winter hopefully you will be able to see the Banzai Pipeline at its best.
