This photo was taken on the world famous Banzai Pipeline. For the conditions to be optimal for not only surfing but surf photography there needs to be a big swell, the right direction of the swell, a clear sunny day and also favorable wind conditions.
On this day it all came together for this shot. This photo captures when all the conditions are at the most desirable state. For this shot the water is in an almost glass like condition, as you can see from the near perfect reflection of the surfer in the water, and the swell is coming in at the right direction for the perfect wave with a perfect barrel and there was little to no wind for most of the day.
Great waves on the Banzai Pipeline come in at anywhere from 8 to 10 feet on the low end to about 20 to 25 on the high end. I am not exactly sure where this wave comes in at, but it looks to be at least 20 feet. When you see the surfer in the shot and how small he looks in comparison to the wave that gives you a good idea of how large this wave actually is. Sometimes surfers refer to the height of waves as 2 to 3 times overhead. This wave looks to be around 4 times overhead. All things considered even on the Banzai Pipeline this is a huge wave.
I have taken thousands of shots at some of the best surf spots on Oahu from Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach, Haleiwa, Waikiki, Sandy Beach and of course the Banzai Pipeline and this has to be one of the overall best waves I have ever photographed. The perfect conditions do not come together that often, but when it does it looks something like this. Once you see the Banzai Pipeline breaking like this very few other locations on earth compare to it.
