Description
This image is a digital map created to show the 8 beautiful islands of Hawaii in a wooden style on parchment paper with the great King Kamehameha watermarked on the background.
The eight islands of Hawaii Consist of 4 major islands and 4 minor islands. The big island or "Hawaii" is featured on the bottom right and while it is the largest island by far the main two islands that tourists visit is Oahu and Maui. The big island is the place you want to visit if you are looking to try to see some volcanic activity.
Oahu has the two major cities Honolulu as well as Waikiki. Kauai "the garden island" is the most secluded of the 4 major islands.
The other 4 islands are not really popular tourists destinations. The Island of Molokai is the largest of the minor islands and is known as the leper island because that is where the lepers were sent and once there were considered legally dead by the Hawaiian government.
Laniai has now pretty much become a private island that is now 98% owned by Larry Ellison the founder and chairman of Oracle Corporation. The remaining 2% of the island is owned by the state of Hawaii and some private home owners.
Kaho'olawe is the smallest of the 8 islands and is known as the target island as it used to be used for weapons testing and military training in WWII. No one lives there and it has been turned into an island reserve and to this day no one lives there.
Ni'Ihau has a population of only about 170 as of the 2010 census and it known as the forbidden island as it is off limits to except for the Robinson family and their relatives. Some people who have visited the island estimate that only about 35 to 50 people in total.
