Description
This may not look like much from the photo, but it is one of the most demanding hikes on the island of Oahu. It is 1048 steps straight up to the top. The last half of the hike is twice as steep as the first half so by the time you are getting tired, dehydrated and weak the steps get steeper and steeper.
The summit of Koko Head is about 1,200 feet above Hawaii Kai and the view from the top is incredible. You can see Hanauma Baby, Hawaii Kai, Daimond Head, the back Side of Makapuu Point, The Halona Blowhole and Sandy Beach. It is an amazing view that is worth all the effort, but I have heard that of all the people that make it to the bottom step only about 1 in 6 make it to the summit. Many just turn back right there and some just go half way up to the top and come back down.
This is definitely not a hike for everyone. Some people climb it on a daily basis for a workout and I have heard that some people can summit this in about 12 minutes. I even saw one guy do this bare footed. That is insane!
If you make it to the Island of Oahu it is a must for trail enthusiasts and once you get to the top you will see that the juice is worth the squeeze.
