Artist's Description
This photo was taken close to the North Shore of Oahu of the eastern side of the Waianae Mountain Range in the late morning hours. Just in front of the mountains are acres and acres of pineapple and sugar cane fields.
The highest point on Oahu, the peak Ka'ala, is located at the third peak on the right side at 4,040 feet. The trail to the Ka'ala peak is a very dangerous one that many people have died trying to summit. The view from the top is beautiful but for many, the risk just is not worth it.
There is at least one video on Youtube of climbers summiting this peak. You can see on each side of the climbers', there is sometimes a thousand feet drop on either side of this trail. One wrong step could be the end.
Climbing the Koolau or Waianae mountain ranges probably isn't like what most people think of when they think of summiting a mountain. The surface is so loose that using ropes tied into the mountain will not usually hold. For those that attempt to sum...
